Thanks guys. Pretty consistent response. I knew to do the touch-off thing, which is what I have done years ago. I have the slot specs from the Machinery's Handbook and some cigarette paper. I do have a DRO on the knee, but I've lost trust in it and probably need to replace the scale, so will be relying on the dial mostly. I'll probably do it both ways, both with the touch off and dial vs DRO readings.
And, yes, not even thinking of doing the slot with a slitting saw. Key cutter is due to arrive Thurs. - from McMaster-Carr - great outfit. I called them last night 10:30 and there was someone there. I wanted to combine the key cutter order with an order from yesterday. Too late, already shipped, but she knocked off the shipping for the key cutter just the same.
