There is an option to put chat on its own page. I chose not to setup the mod that way, and I will tell you why. This way, you can read the posts and still see chat on the same page at the same time. Can't do that if it is on its own page. The chat can also be used to leave messages for one another.
Everyone sees the same thing on each page. There is an option for moderators and staff to use a different chat channel, but I didn't see the need for that. This way, if someone needs help, we can be there to give it to them.
The settings on the top right lets you turn chat on and off if you find it annoying. Almost every feature on here can be turned on or off or modified by members because I set it up that way to make the board uber flexible. The only thing that I didn't permit is for members to ignore moderators and administrators and to make themselves invisible. Those are not permitted because we want to be able to contact people if we need to and see what they are doing.
