I need to heat treat some W1.

I suspect my very old heat treat oven may be off on set temperature. That is, set it for 1400F and it does not get that hot.

Is there an easy way to check it?

I assume you do not have a pyrometer and perhaps you do not want to purchase a new tool (I know, hard to get my head around that one). You can look into Kiln Cones. HERE is a link to what I am talking about on Amazon .

Karl,
You are always welcome to use my oven. Yes, I know Tamarack is a distance!!
Have you considered heat markers e.g. https://www.mcmaster.com/products/heat-markers/
Or, using a steel heat temp chart?
Yes, it's a qualitative evaluation and old school. I've got one printed and mounted above my oven. Seems to work for my applications.

Hadn't considered a thermocouple. So many options....

I've seen some single K-type thermometers even cheaper- like 7 bucks from Aliexpress

HF has a multi-meter that includes a thermocouple reader.
EGT probes are a good choice for use, as they're set up to handle around 2,000 *F.
