What is the average going price range for a 5912 lathe? looking at one that will need work to the hydraulics for the VSD.

Thanks, Chip

Well, local prices rule. I bought a very lightly used 5913 recently, overall equivalent tooling, and paid $3500 for it. I've never paid that much, or even half that much, for any machine ever. Probably should have bargained a bit more as I figure I paid probably top dollar for it. But it is such a nice machine and was in such good shape that I figured I deserve nice things so did the deal. My time has some value, and I save quite a bit of money now by not spending so much time and effort chasing down a good lathe deal.

Thanks eeler1,

Appreciate your input. The asking price on this one is $3k. The other (2) that are currently available in this area are around $2k, however they don't have much in the way of accesories or tooling and they are seemingly from a dealer which says they are probably $1k lathes. This one comes out of a currently working job shop private individual. Hopefully I can strike a bargain given it will need work to the VSD at the least. Hope to look at it this weekend.

Can't speak to price there in Virginia, some places have an abundance of machine tools, others have a dearth.

Depending on what kind of work is needed on the VSD, it could get expensive. I tore mine down and replaced the belts, then bled the VSD hydraulics using an alternative bleed method with a machining bud bleeding at the bottom while I worked the top end. The method is in the files section here;

Also put up a video about the rebuild here;

But great machines, I'd buy this one again.

Thank you eeler,

I notice you also have a older Logan. I am also looking at an 820 that seems to be in excellent condition and comes with a full compliment of tooling. He is asking top dollar for it $2500. Don't think it will serve me as well as the Clausing, nor is it as capable...that being said it would provide me an avenue to hit the ground running...the Clausing will need some work as well as tooling/accessories. Enjoy your video's Thanks

Can you post the link to theVSD bleeding ?

Ok, here's a direct link;

Not mine, I got it from a guy named Webb over at one of the other machining forums. Very helpful guy.

Chopper, the Clausing is a much more capable machine than that Logan. The 820 has the small hole through the spindle for starters, and is less rigid and does not have the variable speed. I had a 825, similiar size machine, and it was very nice and I did a lot of good work on it. The Clausing is likely a later vintage and is just easier to do accurate work, big dials, hardened bed, etc. Not saying that the Logan is not a good fit for you, but is a different class of lathe.

I joined that group yesterday and hunted around but could not find the exact procedure for bleeding the VSD
Was there a YouTube video on it? If not could you copy and paste the instructions for me.
