Clausing 8530 Restoration

Looking great! Do you think you can repair that gouge in the spindle? Could you braze some material in there and re-machine it? I suppose the heat could bend it though?
 
In theory I think it would be possible to braze and re-machine it. It's functional as is, so I'm not sure it's necessary. At this stage I don't have the skill set to machine it, but maybe someday I'll be capable of cutting splines.
 
Since the head was a rather elaborate piece to prep for paint I thought it might be beneficial to share the photos I took along the way.

Here it is after degreasing and evaprorust treatments.

Then here we have it after masking and plugging all the holes with silicone plugs. This was by far the most involved masking job of the whole project thus far.

The original spindle bearings were packed ~50% full of Lucas Red-N-Tacky #2 grease and installed one at a time, using a bearing separator with a scrap of aluminum on top of the nose to protect the end of the spindle and give something to press against.

Spacer, star washer and nut reinstalled. Hopefully I bent in one of those tabs at some point to lock the nut in place.

A CR Chicago Rawhide Seal 13548 was purchased from ebay for about $12 and pressed in with bearing/seal installation tools in the bench vice.

Not sure I mentioned it, but after degreasing and derusting the quill and seal retainer were hit polishing compound and a loose cotton wheel, no cutting compounds or abrasives were used, so as not to change the dimensions of them. Then a coating of Renaissance Micro-Crystalline Wax Polish was applied to keep them from rusting. This wax has been used extensively on all polished items throughout the build. It has proven to work really well in preventing rust from forming on polished steel in my previous restoration projects.

Anyhow here's the quill all polished up and put back together.

Here's the fine downfeed gears put back in place. The gears, along with the unpainted portions of the head casting, were brushed with a SAE 20 oil.

The cover was reinstalled. I'm not sure what is supposed to retain the two alignment dowels in this cover, it seemed like they could just slip out.

The upper spindle bearing was replaced with a new one.

The spindle pulley sleeve was used to slowly inch the bearing down into place.

To push it that last little bit past the top of the quill I designed a 3D printed spacer to temporarily fit between the sleeve and bearing. It was removed once the bearing was seated. No photos were taken of the spacer, but it looked like an extra thick washer.

The spindle pulley was chucked up in the lathe and polished up with a bit of gray Scotchbright.

New bearings installed in the spindle pulley and retained with the c-clip and funky fiber washer.

Looks like you could use a hydraulic press. I have "spare" 12 ton benchtop press that I don't use now that my 20t is out of storage, and I'll be passing through your area next month... You can have it for a token price, I just don't want to see you mess up a bearing or bust your vise for this kind of work.

I do need a press, but I've been keeping an eye out for a big floor model. I suppose maybe a little bench setup might be my best option due to space constraints. I've got an arbor press but it's almost useless due to how small it is so that's why i was thinking bigger=better. I'd be interested to see what you've got if you have photos or the make/model you could share.
