Cleaning really cruddy old collets?

I stocked up on one pound containers of Lye for cheap from a closing hardware store. I set up a hot caustic tank with an old 15 gallon SS commercial sink for things just like this. Lye is still available online from soap making suppliers, it's not for everyone but it works for me.

A much safer option would be a dishwasher. The racks would be perfect for collets and a heavy dose of detergent will do a good job on grease. If I only had more room...
 
Thanks so much everyone for your advice! I decided to start with WD-40 and a brass wire wheel, as I had both handy (and buy WD in gallons...). Worked wonders, thanks so much!
