I BOUGHT A 3 TON PRESS FROM ENCO WHEN THEY HAD THEM ON SALE .
THIS WAS A BARGAIN BECAUSE I ALSO GOT THE FREE DELIVERY .
ONCE I GOT IT , I WAS NOT IMPRESSED WITH IT's ABILITES
FORTUNATELY , THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
THE RATCHET DOES GIVE YOU MORE CHOICES OF WHERE TO PULL THE LEVER
BUT DOES NOTHING TO INCREASE YOUR MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE .
I FOUND A WAY TO IMPROVE MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE WITH SOME
GOOD OLD FASHIONED GEARING .
THERE ARE THREE GEARS . THEY ARE 1.5" WIDE TO CARRY INCREASED LOADS .
THE 50 TOOTH MAIN GEAR IS KEYED TO THE SHAFT OF THE PRESS .
THE 50 TOOTH INTERMEDIATE GEAR REVERSES THE ROTATION .
THE 20 TOOTH PINION INCREASES YOUR EFFORT BY 2 1/2 TIMES !
THERE ARE TWO 1/4" STEEL PLATES WITH THE GEARS IN BETWEEN LIKE A CLOCK .
EACH SHAFT IS DRILLED & CROSS DRILLED FOR EASY GREASING & TAPPED FOR A ZERK .
THE PRIMARY PLATE MUST BE FIXED ROTATIONALLY FOR THE GEARING TO WORK
SO I DRILLED & TAPPED 12 M6 HOLES IN THE CAST IRON & USED GRADE 10.9
FLATHEAD SCREWS .THERE , THAT OUGHTA' DO IT .
THE LEVER IS 3/4 STAINLESS AND PARKS PAST VERTICAL SO NO COUNTERWEIGHT IS NEEDED .
IT IS TIED TO THE PINION GEAR WITH A SQUARE PIN ON EACH END .
THE PINION HAS HAD 4 TEETH REMOVED SO WHEN IT IS IN THE PARKED POSITION ,
THE OTHER TWO GEARS CAN ROTATE TO ANY POSITION .
THE LEVER HAS 180° OF MOTION SOME OF THIS IS LOST IN THE ENGAGEMENT PROCESS .
I WILL USE THIS MAINLY FOR INSTALLING PEMS , PRESSING BEARINGS AND
BROACHING KEYS IN PULLEYS AND GEARS .
