I need to make a base plate (t-nut) for a BXA lathe QC tool post. The stock measures 2in wide x 3/4in thick.

Is cold rolled stock the preferred material?

It will work just fine. The modulus of elasticity for "cold rolled" is around 50-60,000 lbs. The bolt diameter for a BXA is over 1/2" diameter. If you ever put 25-30,000 lbs force against those threads, I'd say you got other problems to deal with right at that moment.

That's what I made mine out of and have had no problems.
If I remember right there was a base-plate that came with QCTP (that didn't fit) and it didn't seem to be anything special.
