Confirm how to get started with CNC

I am a happy Smoothstepper Ethernet users. I did follow their advice and added a separate ethernet card so there would only be two devices on the "network".
 
Yeah, i was thinking of using a laptop. I guess I'll rethink that. I certainly want simple
 
Laptop USB might not be a smart choice but using a laptop with an Ethernet connection to the motion controller should be just fine.
