OK: I've been urged to post so I'm going to try. If these pictures are too small I'm out of luck because the originals have been lost, I only have the small versions.

I bought this small drill press new for $39 and change some years back. The quill had way too much slop, here's how I fixed it. I've seen the question come up several times in various forums.

First I marked out, chain drilled, and punched out a hole on the bottom and back of the bore in the head casting. I cleaned up the opening with files and a mounted stone. This opening was to allow access for splitting the web at the backside of the bore, and to allow the casting to flex when a pinch bolt is tightened. Next I used that high tech sawing apparatus to split the casting from the hole I'd made clear through into the bore. Then I blocked the casting up as level as I could on my larger drill press and drilled through both sides of the casting for a 5/16 bolt.

After reassembling the quill into the head, I installed a cross bolt and snugged it up till the quill would move up and down freely, but without any side shake that I could feel when trying to wiggle it sideways.

Well Picasa is not cooperating, can't link to the pictures, was going to attach four photos. If a moderator wants to PM me, I can email the pictures and maybe he can add them.

Jim

Edit, Got some links, we'll see if they work.

Edit, I had image only, no link checked but it didn't work that way. Are there instructions for posting photos on this forum?
