I need to take a trip up to Port Perry Ont. soon . Just say from Syracuse , is I81 the easiest way to cross the border ? I know passports are needed these days . If picking up a piece of equipment is there anything involved when re-entering the US ? I want to swing down thru Toronto and to the Canadian side of the Falls to show the wife . She's never seen that side . Is this a possible 2 day trip or more , or can it be done in a single day ? I don't mind the driving . TIA . Dave .

To ship this piece would be $300 flat rate , but I figure I could make a cool road trip out of it . :)

I would suggest an overnight as it can be over 3 hours from Port Perry to Niagara Falls. As for paperwork US Customs can answer that one.
I81 to the border. Be aware that the stretch from Syracuse to the border is trouble if it is snowing like it is tonight! After the border and a short run turn west on 401 towards Toronto. On leaving Port Perry back down to either 407 (expensive toll road) or 401. Easy run to Niagara Falls. Use 401 to 403 to QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way). There you can cross at Lewiston or Rainbow Bridge, but Rainbow Bridge is less friendly to commercial importation, more tourist and commuters. I would suggest crossing at Lewiston or Fort Erie to Buffalo NY to get to the I90.

Sure doesn't look that far on Google maps ! Not that time has anything to do with it , the wife has never been in Canada . I stayed a couple weeks in St Catherines years ago for work , enjoyed that side of the Falls . I guess the Casino and Hardrock is still there ? Either way , Thanks for the info , and I will make the trip !! :encourage:

You basically have to cross Toronto so you might want to consider timing your trips so you're not doing it in rush hour. The section of Highway 401 across the top of Toronto is one of the busiest highways in North America.

There are tonnes of attractions in Toronto, even in the wintertime, so you might want to allocate a bit of time to that.

I was going to mention that also. I-81 runs thru Tug Hill, and that stretch from Pulaski to Watertown has nothing in between, and that's where the big lake effect snows happen. Think feet instead of inches. I-90 from Syracuse to Buffalo is no better with the lake effect there also. Watch the weather is all I can tell you and when they call for lake effect find a place to stay, they do close the Thruways sometimes.

If any of you have ever plowed snow with a blade, mounted on the front of a Ford F-250 (or equivalent), that's about the experience I had when trying to move too much snow.
Great fun, thanks for sharing.

We'll survive that one too. as long as the snow is powdery and not wet, my snow blower will give me good workout.
