Gib Tweaking?

Playing with the gibs on my Clausing 8520 mill. Is there a general rule adjusting them? How tight is to tight?

To use that advice will have you accelerating the wear on all the sliding surfaces involved, including the lead screw and nut. The machine manuals I have read, and the more experienced people that I have talked to say to loosen the gibb until no friction is felt, then tighten until a noticeable drag is felt. Too loose and things will move in untended directions. Too tight and you accelerate wear on the machine. There is some 'feel' in determining when you have them tight enough that typically is learned from experience.
