I am nearly finished rebuilding this high speed subhead. When I got it, it did not turn. The quill moved, at that was about it. There appears to be at least 3 different versions of these. I currently have 2, but one is being off to a member here. That one, has straight cut gears, and the bearings are mounted directly in the bore, on the machine side. On the one for my 12, theses same bearings are in a removable cartridge. Mine is driven by a spline, and has helical gears. There are pictures on this forum of a 3rd type that is not spline driven.
The first pic is an exploded view of all the assemblies. Then individual assemblies a bit farther down. I had to soak all the bearings for over a week to free them up, and the rinse with brake cleaner. Packed the bearings with a NLGI2 grease. Still nees to paint the castings.
