Who loves to read the vintage issues of Popular Mechanics available on Google Books will find useful, to convert prices in today dollars, the "Inflation Calculator" available online here: http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm
For example the 1959 price of a South Bend 16" lathe was $2,468 (nice ad here: https://encrypted.google.com/books?id=HtwDAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PP1&pg=PA232#v=onepage&q&f=false). This doesn't seems a lot of money, but reporting it to 2014 it is a buying power of $20,106.31.
