I'm machining some shafts for a gearbox that I'm getting splined by a shop (I dont have the tools or the know-how), and was wondering how much material to leave them for splining. For an external spline should I turn them down to the final major diameter of the splines or do I need to leave some extra material? Same goes for internal splines. Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers

That would be a great question to ask the shop that is doing the work. I always appreciated it when the customer asked me how I wanted the material instead of showing up with a bucket of parts already cut too short or 1/2 in. too long.

Yeah I agree, unfortunately there is a bit of a time crunch as its for a student project, and the shop is small and very hard to get a hold of. If theres doubt I could just leave extra material and they could turn it down to whatever they need?
