I've been trying to put the lathe into low range. When I move the lever to engage the gears into the spindle gears it locks it up and the belt just slips.

you'll need to pull the bull gear pin to the outside position, that unlocks the back gears from the spindle

Theres a grub screw on the middle pulley
Take that out and put some oil in there every time you use it.
‘Also the one on the mesh gears.
they run on brass bushes with oil grooves in them.

And only turn that screw in flush to the bottom of the pulley, don’t run it all the way in!

Interesting point- most larger lathes have gotten away from backgears
