I bought a lamp but it has an absolutely horrible finial on top. So, I have a lathe - I'll make my own I said to myself.

Checked the thread of the existing finial and it appeared to be 3/8-24, at least my thread checker screwed in quite a ways so, turned my new finial, tapped it 3/8-24 and as you may have guessed, it didn't screw on.

So to get the point here, what is the thread of those things and what tap/die will I need should I decide to make my own again?

Thank you for your time,
Michael.

I recently went through this a few months ago. I think it turned out to be 3/8-28.

Lamp fittings are typically 1/8" SPT. A 1/8" NPT tap could be used in a pinch although The hole would need to be deeper to allow threading to the proper diameter.
Edit: Dang beat me to the post! ^^^
