Lathe Inserts

Hi...

The C1, C2... rating indicates the hardness of the insert. The numbers go up higher but commonly, you'll see C1 through C7 most often. C1 is considered "tougher" because it's not as brittle and wont chip or fracture as easily as C7. C1 is more suited to interrupted cuts. C7 can cut harder materials but, cannot tolerate interrupted cuts.

The coatings are very thin and super-hard. They protect the fine edges of the insert from chipping and in some cases, the coatings provide a slight "Teflon effect" and help retard material from building-up (welding) to the cutting edge. If you get all coated inserts (usually TiN coating) you'll be fine for all purposes.

Please realize that with carbide, your RPMs need to be about 2x the rate as for HSS. The cuts you made appear to be on soft steel and if you crank-up the RPMs, you'll get a nice finish.

Good luck and happy experimenting/learning...
