Line Scratching

I have made several blacksmith's hook rules by cutting the graduations using the cross feed manually on my #2 B&S mill, I hold the tool in a fly cutter holder in the horizontal spindle, with the holder braced against the overarm to prevent rotation, each 1/16" line is cut with a a tool approximately a 15 degree included angle up to a series of limit lines scratched lengthwise on the blank; spacing of the lines is done with a B&S rack gear tooth spacing attachment.

MrWhoopee, how small a center drill? Are you dragging flat across the surface? Your first and last marks are exactly what I'm trying to achieve. They are smooth.

A #1 center drill IIRC, spinning as fast as you dare. Touch off the surface, then crank up .001 and make a line. If you want it wider, crank up a little more. My lines look rough because I had grained the piece on a 60 grit belt sander.
