Here is a picture of the 3 jaw chuck that came with my lathe. By the patina alone it could be original. I want to take it apart and clean it up. Full of chips, old grease and crap. Do you think this is an original Logan? It is stamped
1063 on the face. Then in a different area on the face it says made in the USA. All the jaws are numbered . Is there a Best way to do this and not screw it up?
Thanks
Mike
Happy Easter

Hard to mess it up. First make sure that the jaws are numbered and corresponding numbers in the correct location. Then simply remove jaws. Then remove screws holding the 2 main pieces together. It might take a bit of tapping to separate. From there you are home free. Pull apart and give a good cleaning. Then use a bit of oil. Less better and reassemble.

Cutting oil is my blood.

Like the jaws, you might want to mark your backplate and chuck to make sure you put it back in the same orientation. There may be a slight difference and could give your chuck a bit of runout. Better safe than sorry!

There are good videos showing chuck disassembly and cleaning on YouTube. Give’s you an idea what to expect. Pretty easy, but the sometimes take some brass/lead hammer work and I was more comfortable with that after watching some videos

Oil vs grease is a big topic of debate. Just remember not too use too much oil or you and your shop ceiling will get a racing stripe on your first startup! LOL

Getting it apart was easy. What a mess. Cleaning time

I don't believe Logan made their own chucks, but it could be as old as the lathe itself. So I guess that would make it original
but not a "Logan" chuck

I wondered about that. Scott Logan told me that they didn't make the cabinets for the lathes.

I talked to Scott this morning to order 1 more part. I asked about the chucks and explained how they are marked. He said that 4 digit number sounds like a Logan Engineering number and the chucks were made by Buck.

What was going to be my last Logan part showed up. I tried to install the take up nut on the back of the spindel. No can do,spindel threads are trashed.so I found a really nice used one and ordered it. So now I'm looking into how to remove and replace said spindel. From what I can find so far it not that hard. And I'll replace the end seals at the same time.
What I foundcwhen I pulled the spindel rear drive gear floored me, no Woodruff key. So the gear train was not moving at all. Very strange to find that missing but that goes along with the boogered up threads.
I'm still working on getting my 220 installed so I can't run it yet anyway.
