I believe they have a magnetic sheet behind the stainless. I remember being pleasantly surprised that stuff would stick to it.
Edit: not a magnet, but something that is magnetic.

Most appliances are cheap 303 or 304 SS which in most case is slightly magnetic

How do you get it to stick on stainless steel?

There are at less three different classes of stainless steel. Some of these steels are magnetic or partially magnetic. Some refrigerators now made have a special coating that is magnetic or made out of a magnetic stainless. After all there is a need to hang your kids or grandkids crayon pictures so manufactures are being accommodating.
