What is the correct name for a milling cutter that can clean the sides of job.
For instance, a 6" square block 1" thick, and I want to remove metal from the side.
Also what would be the best style cutter.
I've been known to just use the side of a standard endmill. You need to use one of a big enough diameter to reduce deflection. I always mke my last pas a free cut and climb milling for a good finish.
HSS truly shimes here if you use something at least .75". I use a 1" 6 flute by 6" long end mill just for this task. Only shave a couple thou at a time. It does make needles that love to stick in you.
Thanks, I have been using end mills but wondered if there were special cutters for this.
I dont have a mill but use a vertical slide on my lathe.
It does flex a tad and I need to make another support bracket under the overhang.
Here I'm cutting a slot with an 8mm end mill, due to the flex the cut surface is not dead flat and needs a file to finish
