That’s also the problem. You won’t have the wheel speed for the stone to work properly. Unless your using a 10” wheel. Going slower will degrade the wheel faster than normal. It will pull the grit out instead of the grit on the wheel cutting as designed.

I see it a lot with cut off wheels on my angle grinder which is my go to at work for cutting. 6” wheel cuts like a hot knife in butter. By the time the wheel degrades to 3” or less you can watch the wheel fall apart turning to dust speeds are just to slow for proper cutting action.

Depends on diameter. Grinding speeds are specified in surface feet per minute, SFPM, you will have to do the math. Here is a chart of grinding speeds:

Cuts well at ~1200RPM with the grinding wheel, mirror like finish, 1 or 2 thou per pass. When using the cutoff wheel I just go slower. I always cover the table and surrounding areas with cardboard or cloth. I've seen some knifemakers use a 72" sander for "surface grinding".
