Rebuilding Monarch C tail stock and would like to know if the two tang screws are supposed to be adjusted against the tang every time or set in place tight so the tang just slides between them? I am thinking adjusted to the tang so there is no slop as the originals are completely rounded off from the tang rocking back and forth. But I don't know, what say the forum. Cheers!

They should be set to have clearance on the tang and not tightened against it.

That should be OK unless some tangs are burred over, on the 12" CK that I had, I never used it for drilling, instead had a MT taper holder for the Aloris tool post.

I'd think you'd want to to be a bit more loose than .005" since tangs can vary. I have one tool that someone welded a tang onto. I don't know if it broke of and was repaired or an all new tang, but it is a bit bigger than my others. It just has to keep the tool from turning in the taper.

My Monarch tail stock holds the 4mt taper very well. The tang is only used on mine to push the taper out when the quill is retracted back into the tailstock
