Yikes! You're a braver man than I! I cut at about the slowest speed I can get. That said, I cut with HSS which is much more forgiving at slow speeds.
Yes, I need to grind an HSS tool.

I switched from 100% carbide to nearly 100% HSS when I got my bigger lathe this past summer. I find the HSS gives a much better surface finish, and is much more forgiving. Additionally, it is way more convenient that I can mess up a cutter and just re-grind it rather than roast a Carbide insert and toss it. Ever mis-calculate a F&S? With inserts, it was "welp, that just toasted 1/4 or 1/2 of the usable surfaces, better not do it again". With HSS it is, "welp, I guess I need to spend 30 seconds on the grinder".
