Here are shots of my set up and the finished piece. My plan was to make the blank (poet and don't know it) and cut my first gear, inspect it, turn the teeth off and to the next workable diameter and cut the second. I think I'm going to keep this one as a souvenir. Let me know if there's something I'm over looking.289775289776289777289778

Looking good. Looks a lot better than my first gears.
I started out with a 3 jaw chuck on my dividing head, but found it wasn't accurate enough for the gears to run smooth.
I use tapered mandrels or build a keyed mandrel and machine between centers on the lathe and index on the dividing head between centers also.

All a money pit from here. Lots of fun though.
8 cutters for every tooth size.
Mandrels so you can do a narrow gear with center hole.
Heat treat oven for hardening them.

Cutting between centers was going to be my next step. I do have a nice selection of tapered mandrels also.

Haven’t cut any yet.
Your gear cutting venture looks great to me
