Need help tapping 5/16-22 holes in 304

True, and with your 22 pitch tap, that is a sacrifice....BUT, any tap with the correct form, provided it will fit in the hole, can be used as a thread bar. Just not one with a finer pitch, as it won't have the thread depth.

I've done it a couple times with a pencil grinder, but it was only because it was 2 or 3am and we were out of taps and it had to be done by in the morning..


we use to send larger taps out to be reground, the place we sent them to had a cnc grinder, usually like 3/4" and larger taps.. they werent all that great either.. The owner couldnt understand why his money saving reground taps were actually costing him more money than new taps, several of us had to explain that trying to extract broken taps takes time..
