Hi everyone.
I'm in the process of restoring a Smithy MI1239LTD or at least giving it a good overhaul. My question is this: besides removing and replacing the oilers (like in attached pic), what is the best way to mask them off? Is coating them in vasoline or similar a good option to keep paint off of them? Any help is good help. Thanks.

Yes, I would use petroleum jelly or some sort of grease applied with a cotton swab.

I sure wouldn't put grease or Vaseline on them, sure enough that's just going to get smeared somewhere you don't want it and contaminate your prep for your new paint job before the first drop of paint even gets applied.
I'd use a hollow punch and cut tape dots and apply over them if it were mine.

One of those old- timey school hand paper punches would be perfect for that- I always keep one handy. Good for gasket making too

Are the oilers threaded? If so, use a threaded plug with masking tape wrapped around the threads, with a slight overlap. Screw the plugs into the threaded holes finger tight and then further tighten about an eighth of a turn with a wrench.
