I had 48 headshots to do at a local dance studio and needed to mount one of my softboxes on the floor to fill in shadows created by the key light above the dancers, mounted directly on the floor tripod base was too low, but the extension rod provided with it was too tall for the shorter girls. So, I decided to make one a bit shorter.

I turned the fittings to mount in the tripod base and the flash bracket out of 1215, a simple turning operation that had a recess for the thumb screws that hold it in place, and a threaded end for mounting flashes directly to it if needed on one of them. For the extension bar, I used a piece of 1/2” conduit I had left over. It worked perfectly, just the right height to provide light where needed, and low enough that it didn’t block the camera when the younger girls were getting their picture taken. I didn’t secure the pieces together in case I needed to change the length of the conduit piece, but now I will Loctite them together.
