On my cross slide there are 2 (brass?) Nuts that go on the acme threads. I've oiled and greased these guys but the cross slide is still pretty stiff when turning. These guys are flat on one end and beveled on the other. Could it be that I'm just not orienting them right?

What brand of lathe do you have? Every manufacture has something different, or almost.

Many lathes use a split nut to allow you to adjust for wear in the nut. The actual arrangement to effect the adjustment varies from one manufacturer to the next. Generally not very complicated. Perhaps yours is just set up too tight? Of course this does nothing to compensate for wear in the cross slide lead screw - if the mid point is good, then the ends will be too tight.

Here are the nuts to the cross slide. It's an enco 110-2075, and I don't believe the Gibbs are too tight.
