Restoring Engraved Lines

Thanks to everyone. I'm learning a lot, too. Engraving is something I've never delved into.

How about useing a carbide hand scribe mounted in a drill chuck in your mill, mount the rule in the table vice, use the X & Y axis controls to locate the tip of the scribe in the proper location, use the quill's spider handle to keep a moderate amount of downward pressure on the scribe and use the Y axis hand wheel to move the rule under the scribe point (like precision scratching). Start out with a light pressure on the spider handle and adjust downward pressure as needed. Might leave a slight burr on the sides of the line which can easily be stoned away. Be sure to turn the power switches off on the mill, this would be a "by hand only" operation.
