Rotating parts in a V-block

What about holding your part in a collet block. Your features will be as accurate as the block. You can take to surface plate without losing your setup.
 
The idea about hanging the socket on a parallel is a good one. I can envision a custom ground rectangular shaft maybe with a magnet embedded in the end so it holds the socket better. Then come in below and measure the bottom surface of the square.

Don't most high end DROs have an output that can be captured?

There's 5-Volt TTL type signals coming out of the glass scales. I've thought of capturing that with an adruino. In theory, it's already done. But in practice, I've only got a box of miscellaneous electronic parts.
