Screwless vise screw stripped, why?

Don't know if it is a nifty nut or not, but it's mine :) Made it out of 1.25" OD 1144. Turned it down to 11/16" (0.6875") for about 1/2" so I could hold it in a ER32 collet. 11/16" is about 0.030" less than the diameter of the spherical washer on the vise. The 1/2" length is sort of a standoff from the movable vise jaw. When in the ER32 chuck, turned down the diameter to 1.125". Then leaving 1/8" to form a flange, reduced the last 1/2" to 0.880". Drilled and tapped for M8.

Then transferred the piece to the dividing head on my mill and cut the hex shape. Took me forever to tram the dividing head for some reason, much longer than normal. It always seemed I needed 0.004" to move. It was like the head was translating rather than rotating. Finally got it to about 0.001" over 1.5" and decided it was enough for what I need. Cut the hex with a 1/2" radiused end mill. It was 0.060" radius. Hex was cut to 0.750" to fit a stubby box end wrench.

Back to the lathe for minor edge easing. Then assembled the vise using the vise nut, the spherical washer, the grade 12.9 stud and the new nut I made. Determined somewhere around 90mm would be where I would cut the stud. Made it a little long as I can always cut off some.

Might not be the prettiest nut in the shop, but it sure is custom and functional!

Started with a vise that was stripping threads on the tightening screw. Ended with improved vise and custom nut. Seems good to me. :cool:

Wowsers! That's a significant improvement over my original effort. Guess I need to start playing catch-up.

My best guess is that somebody tried to tighten the vise with the screw at too steep or shallow an angle for the vise opening, so the edges of the hole in the movable jaw were interfering with the screw threads during tightening.
 
I have a smaller (3") Shars "toolmaker's vice" I ended up making new screw. nut & pin. Works much better now.
