Sherline 5400 Mill DRO or Upgrade?

For a Sherline, magnetic scales would be the best way to go, price notwithstanding. They are slim, easy to install, and take up very little space. DROPros has them with very small mounting end caps that do not project beyond the actual scale. A Sherline lathe is quite accurate, not a toy. It deserves quality scales, but they are expensive. Accuracy depends on what you are making at the moment, one cut may have a tolerance of .500", the next cut .0001", but ideally .00000".

I no longer have my Sherline lathe and mill. I had the Sherline DRO on my mill that used encoders. Good for general use, but when I needed to be more precise I used dial indicators.

I've moved on to larger machines, and made the move to mag scales on my latest machines. I love mag scales. Very accurate. Especially when I need to hold to a sub thou dimension. And yea, I'm a hobby machinist/hack. :)
