For a Sherline, magnetic scales would be the best way to go, price notwithstanding. They are slim, easy to install, and take up very little space. DROPros has them with very small mounting end caps that do not project beyond the actual scale. A Sherline lathe is quite accurate, not a toy. It deserves quality scales, but they are expensive. Accuracy depends on what you are making at the moment, one cut may have a tolerance of .500", the next cut .0001", but ideally .00000".
