On a spindle like this, it's always a good idea to put witness marks on the lock ring and pinion gear and count the number of exposed threads on the spindle so that you can get the ring back to the original position.

That's exactly what I did.

And yes, I do have the cover for the ring gear.

I did not find felt in the oil cups. On top of the ram, there is a flat bar which, from old brochures, looks like it was to hold a can with a spout. I'm assuming for oil. Although I'm not really sure. Seems like a strange place to have an oil container. Unless it was suppose to be some type of drip set up for cutting oil.
