can a tapmatic auto tapper or similar type be used on a lathe to tap and retreat?

No as winegrower stated , but they do have tapping heads for lathes . Or , just power tap with the tailstock .

Absolutely yes , and I have done it . Also , I made a adaptor for the Tapmatic to hold a threading die . Back in the 90's I threaded 100's of rifle barrels that way . You hold the Tapmatic in the lathe spindle and then hold the part on the lathe carriage .
