With the help of the members here, I have decided to get a tapping head. Send like the 2 major manufacturers are Tapmatic and Procunier. Are there any preferences to brand due to reliability, strength or ease of use? Is either brand better built?

Thanks for the help.

Either is probably fine, but make sure whichever you buy has a friction clutch rather than a dog clutch; they break taps!

I've production tapped #0-80 threads in copper with a Tapmatic and an SPV tapping head, some people say the Procunier is better but I've had no issues with the Tapmatics

If someone has a procunier 3 with straight shank, either 1/2" or 5/8", I am interested. Thanks

I would recommend this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1rZ_M1Qnys.
I have 2 of these heavy duty & a light duty one, Compact design and no collets needed, very well engineered.
Only modification I made was to thread the MT for use in a universal mill, much more secure when reversing, as the clutch does rattle & bang when it arrives at the torque setting.
I cannot tell where you can buy these, I believe the original was a Dutch company design, probably some outlets in USA stock them.

Do you have a name/manufacturer for these ???
Hard to search for them without any info.
I made a quick search and if what I found is the same thing it's made by R. Mansukhlal & Co. and sold through IndiaMart.
Automatic Reversible Safety Tapping Attachments (Model TC)

I couldn't find any US distributors.

Sorry I do not have more details, I had a catalog a long time ago now long gone.
It would be interesting what prices the Indian company want for them, some tooling can be cheaper from India.
There was a member in USA had one of these which he had picked up sec hand, you might put out a wanted on the forum, you never know.

I have used both for years. Never had any problems with either. Most of my broken tap problems could be traced back to hole dim, chips, dull tap etc. Use lots of tapping fluid.
