I grind my own HSS tools but I'm tempted to try somethig new. So what's the difference between a 16IR AG60 compared to 16ER AG60 turning inserts?

IR is internal threading and ER is external threading. If you look at them closely you will see that they are a different orientation, like mirror image of the other. The IR will mount on a boring bar and the ER on a tool post mounted traditional holder. They are not interchangeable.
