Thread chasing R8 collet threads?

I have a Chinese made arbor that isn't threaded deep enough and I must use a spacer on the draw bare in order to shorten it. My question is are the Chinese arbors typically soft enough to chase with a tap?

I tried with one. Got it a bit deeper but chipped a nice tap in the process.

You could anneal the end with a torch and soften it a bit
