Here's a cat 40 holder made by Universal Eng. I am told it is a floating tap holder. Looks like it has some sort of quick connect/release collar.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

While I haven't seen one of these before, I can see how it works. Push the collar toward the body and the ball latches loosen their grip on a groove around the shaft of the tool. The two notches at the near end of the adapter transfer the power to the tool when inserted. Is that ring at the bottom of the pocket spring-loaded? That would eject the tool when released.

You would obviously need the right insert to go with the adapter. Easy enough to make that to hold whatever you wanted.

Looks like I asked too soon.

With a little more digging on my part I found a confirmation that it is a quick change tap chuck. It is part of the "Kwik-Switch" family of Universal Engineering. You need Tap Adapters that fit the mount.

Anyone have experience with these?
