I had originally built a cross slide using aluminum and steel. It was too giving and I had a lot of chatter. I added about 50lbs of material to it by casting it in concrete anx encapsulating that into epoxy resin. Now it is super smooth. You can see the final and finished cross slide cutting here

I still have a few weekends of tests and calibrating on this tool and possibly adding a tail stock. But thanks to everyone for the great ideas on improving the design.
