Very Specialized B&S .500" Micrometer: Can You ID the Purpose, Please?

Flea Market find...for $1.

On a .500" frame, but probably purpose built in the shop. Functionally, it can only open to .375". At that point the spindle disappears behind the throat.

Any wisdom about this Brown & Sharpe mic will be gratefully received, and acknowledged!

Agreed, seeing the round anvil & 1/2" capacity makes me think the same, for measuring tubing/pipes.

I have a Starret 576 & that's what it's for. Round anvil & also 1/2" capacity. I never use it. Just got it cause the small size was cute & it was in excellent condition. Feels weird to call a micrometer cute, forgive me. :D

Also used to be used for measuring flat head Ford floating rod bearings, and tubing wall thickness.
