Hello all,

I’ve had a VN 10 DH sitting in storage for years now. Just pulled it out to use it, and discovered the quill is bored for something significantly larger than my VN 5c collets. In fact the existing spindle head geometry looks similar to a #5 MT body- only completely different dimensions - and nothing like a VN 50.

So can someone identify what I am actually dealing with here?

Here are some pics and dims of the DH and the spindle head:

Spindle head diameter (large end): 1.297”
Spindle head diameter (small end): 1.135”
Overall shank length (foot to tip): 6”
Taper length (small end to large end): 4.25”

Spindle thread: 2” ID x 3 TPI

So does this sound like a VN 2/Hardinage 50 taper??

If not, what might it be? I need to make this thing useful, so wish to buy the appropriate collets and a chuck backing plate.

Thanks much, for any assistance.

That long slight taper may be a Brown & Sharpe, maybe a #11?

Both the Van Norman collet sizes C (5V) & 2 (50V) have straight shafts with a short taper at the tool end.

VN #C vs #2 a.jpg

Perhaps a Morse Taper

Or a B & S Taper

Looking forward to seeing what you find out.

So far, NADA. The closest thing is a Brown &Sharpe #10, which I have never seen... not feeling good about this at all.

Glenn,
I received some B&S tapered reamers in a lot off Ebay, One of them is about the size of an MT5.
If you need it for anything, give me a shout.

Jeff, any chance you could measure the big and small end of the taper on your reamers, plus the taper length and post the dims?

One guy over on PM chased this same question a few years ago and discovered B&S made #11 collets and #11 tapered shanks for arbors and tooling, but never differentiated the shapes. A BS11 collet looks nothing like a BS11 arbor shaft.

If your dims match up, I might try buying a B&S 11 - Adaptor of some sort...

Thanks much,
Glenn

Glenn,
These B&S tapered reamers are brand new. I got them in a lot off EBay for pennies. I was not interested in them but they came with many good useable tapered reamers.
Sizes, These are #10, #11, and #12.
Measurements are approximate.
#10 7” taper. Large end 1.335” small end 1.052”
#11 7 3/4 taper, 1.428. 1.132
#12 8 3/8 taper, 1.831. 1.513
I hope this helps

Edit -- According to Travers, their #10 small end is 1.045" - large end 1.340". It's kind of hard to measure these things.

Thanks Jeff, your measurements are very helpful. I measured my dead center again last night and came up with something close to your #10 . 1.300 rather than 1.340. But, the real question is where do you really measure. Think I will try making a #10 taper and see how well it fits... maybe I can cobble some kind of collet sleeve out of a shop made piece, if I can duplicate the taper properly.

Much appreciate it!

Glenn

If you need one of these for a reference I'll send it to you.
All you need to do is ask :)

Jeff,

Very cool offer, thanks.

So looking at your photos again tonight, am I correct in understanding that the reamers themselves are #10 and #11 reamers? I.E. they will actually ream #10 and #11 taper in round stock??? If so, could I possibly borrow or buy them to make a couple of adaptors to physically confirm my unknown arbor?

Initially I didn’t realize these are the actual reamers for making the taper. I assumed the chuck ends were #10, 11, and 12. If so, certainly like to take you up on your offer.

Thanks
Glenn
