Hey all machine nut here. First question spindle play. I recently acquired a Walker Turner older drill press love the machine. Cleaning up found spindle play UP AND DOWN. No side to side or out of round just up and down. Help Ok is there an adjustment I do not see OR do I have to strip the machine down and press in new bearings. Please so help before I strip my machine.

The question is, is the play in the spindle or the rack and pinion gears

John is correct- does the rack mechanism seem to work properly? There will be a small amount of play

My Walker Turner had up and down play before I rebuilt it. It seems someone had the spindle apart before and left out a collar that secured the top spindle bearing in place. Thus the spindle would work it's way down a bit and then back up. It's been fine since I installed a new collar.
Vintage Machinery has a couple good parts diagrams in the literature.
