The turret usually disengages and turns when drawn all the way back, then turn to any position move forward and it locks on that position.

Now when the ram is drawn all the way back it does not unlock the turret.

Does anyone know how to fix that?

Sometimes the cam thingie that locks the turret gets flipped over and runs into the stationery cam on top of the turret slide guide, you get under it with a pry bar and flip it into the opposite position, I had a #4 where this occasionally happened.

Did the lock ring have a tapered groove to allow adjustment? Seems that there was a sweet spot using feeler gauges between the turret and it’s mounting.

Yes, the lock ring has a tapered groove, if the adjustment is not a bit snug, the two lobed cam does not have enough tension on it to stay in the locked position until unlocked by the stationary cam.

No need for feeler gages, I can't see how they could be used, just go by feel on the adjustment nuts, if you have the turret between index stations, you can feel resistance to the turret moving using a lever to try to move it, it does not have to be absolutely tight, just good and snug.
