I was wondering what is the biggest motor HP size anyone has mounted on a Atlas Th42 lathe?

Large motor?
horse power, torque, rpm
voltage and number of phase all have the be taken into conderaton

Agree with Mike, 1 HP is plenty and most people use less on a lathe that size
Unless you mean physical size?

Have a 1/2hp on my 12". Seems to be plenty of power for anything I throw at it. Mike

Then, there's the weight to consider; old USA cast iron versus new Chicom sheet metal housings.

I've got an old Hobart 1hp, all cast iron; weighs damn near 100#. That would tip over an Atlas. Todays 1hp overseas motor typically weighs 25 - 30#

I've got cast iron Craftsman 1/2hp, the sort which were common on the Craftsman/Atlas machines back when which also weigh a young ton, 35 - 50# and a typical overseas weighs 18#.

I believe 1/2 hp was standard on mine.
