IMG_0844.JPG I have been working on restoring an old Wheel Horse garden tractor and found the
rear axel hub key way groove and axel key way groove severely worn. Not wanting
to remove the axel from the transmission, I machined a taper in the hub and machined a matching
taper with a flange on it. A saw kerf was added to the taper along with a groove to fit the key way.
This way the taper can be tightly pulled into the hub clinching down on the axel with mega force.
The axel and hub had considerable wear on them but tightened right up when the socket head
screws were tightened up. The other rear wheel is not as worn but probably will get the same
treatment eventually.

As an added note, I went around and tightened the socket head screws a number of
times to get uniform tension on all the screws.

This same idea is sometimes used on electric motor pulleys to hold the pulley to the shaft. Usually
they use only two screws for tension.
