2015 POTD Thread Archive

I must confess it's the first time I've ever seen a politically correct ham radio bench :p it looks good and of sound purpose .

I like the castor'd legs.. That saves a heck of a lot of humping & bumping when you are forced by SWMBO to move it somewhere else one day .

Looks like we have some other hammies in here.
KB8VUL here.

Project,,, worked on figuring out the mounting for a homebrew toll post grinder. Has a Dumore 17K RPM motor on it that is seriously lacking in torque. Plans for a new motor mount, new pullys to drive the shaft, need to create T bolts and mounting plate to go in place of cross slide due to shaft arbor being 1.25 inches above lathe centerline. Would work OK for OD grinding but not so hot for ID grinding.

Tool Post Grinder. I have an air operated tool, sorta like a high class Dremel tool, that fits inside a boring tool holder. I turn the Four Tool to the angle I want and put a mounted stone in the air tool. Small enough stones can be used in 3/8 ID holes. Or OD any size.

Yeah, This is one for a 5 inch grinding wheel. The shaft as it turns out is 1/2 24 I believe and will accept a 1/2 drill chuck I have for smaller wheels and such. I am looking to build a holder for a dremel tool as well. I own like 6 of the things, so dedicating one to a mount isn't going to be a big deal. I am actually considering an adjustable height mount or at minimum one that would mount on a spacer block so I could move it off center vertically for carbide tool sharpening chores. They make some diamond coated ventilated cutoff wheels that are 1/8 shank that would probably make quick work of carbide end mill sharpening. I was screwing around with putting my spindex in on the lathe ways tonight and attempted to sharpen a 6 flute end mill that was trashed. It didn't turn out too well but it was buggered up real good before so I didn't really make it any worse. I figure that if I get this little setup together I am thinking of that I will be able to clean it right up and make it usable again.

Today I brought home the base to my new mill. I bought a HF 2T cherry picker, built it, and lifted the base out of the back of my Jeep and set it in the garage. Tomorrow I hope to get the actual mill itself home.

It was 78 degrees Fahrenheit outside today, yet it was snowing in the garage - swarf that is. It was flying everywhere! Using my Suburban style fly cutter to surface a cast aluminum housing for a commercial potato peeler. I love this flycutter!!! If anyone has the equipment, time and material, I highly recommend you make one of these. I was taking an eight inch swath but didn't center the cutter so had a one inch section to clean up with a third pass. 500 rpm, .010 deep at 7-1/2"/min.

Bit of luck last night found 5c collet holder in box of bits that came my Clarkson.

Nice job on the jaws. Was the spacing done with aid of a DRO, or just a deft hand on the wheel? Mike
