As a side deal I ended up buying a Hardinge model G compound. I don’t have a Hardinge lathe and know nothing about them. I couldn’t pass it up for $10 though even if it was rusty looking. It’s been sitting in a drawer for 6mo at least waiting for me give it some love. It’s turn came up and it cleaned up really nice. But as with all these things it’s a archeological dig. Turns out it looks like somebody broke it off the cross slide and it might well be warped. There is not only a lock bolt but an eccentric that engages the pivot to lock it. So I’m not sure if somebody didn’t know about eccentric lock then pried it off breaking the casting or cranked the eccentric so hard that broke the cross slide casting.

After cleaning it all up it gets super tight at both end of travel. I’ve not had time to take it back apart and check the dovetails for warp. The dovetails have no apparent scoring or wear that’s why I suspect warp.

Anybody feel like explaining what model G refers to?

its from the early split beds DV-59 (TR-59) I have the later model (mine is a 1941, TR's were first made in 1939) and it has a plastic dial which is way easier to read only difference I think

I appreciate the response but I can see this is one of those things that’s an insider thing. What does split bed refer to exactly?

When I look on eBay I’ve seen cross/top slide units that are marked with different model #’s but no G. Will parts interchange? Right now the the compound has 3 or .004 play so I would think that’s acceptable, no?

Mine is a model s and yours will fit any 1939-46 DV-59 (has a slot down the middle of the bed) mine has 0.008” and 0.006” backlash and makes parts to 0.0005” repeatability

First one is a DV-59 second is a split bed DV-59 (TR-59)

So is there some easy overview of the different models? I’ve done some quick searches and it’s not been easy to get a basic over view of Hardinge.

There is not a lot of info on them and especially the war machines but a few models that are easy to tell apart that are common
DV-59
Chucker
HLV-H
Cataract
TL
Last two are pre war ish and easy to tell apart from the others
