This is not entirely accurate. There IS a recency of experience requirement (see FAR 65.83). The Inspection Authorization (IA) has it's own renewal / currency requirements (FAR 65.93).... Sorry for being a bit pedantic....

In addition to my pilot ratings (ATP and type ratings) I hold an A&P license that I got from the School of Hard Knocks (no formal schooling, but passed the written and practical exams) and that license was important for getting my jobs flying in Alaska. When I wasn't flying, I was working on the aircraft.

Sometimes it was interesting. We once did a gear retract test on a DC-3 with only one jack, and that one would not pump up.
